hi guys.
newbie here, so please go easy on me
i have done a couple of seasons of single venue type stage rallying back in the early 90's in an ex-challenge astra before marriage etc got in the way
now i fancy having another go at it all, more for fun than for anything else.
as i'm an italian car nut i've been trying to think of a suitable car, yes an integrale would be great but that would involve spending far more money than i am willing to go to.
i hav erecently fully restored an alfa romeo alfasud and had toyed with the idea of doing one for the stages, but they aren't that strong and all need loads of welding so i don't fancy that. plus parts are very hard to get hold of.
then i started to think about a fiat x1/9. nice cheap rear engine, rear drive car. but the problems associated with the 'sud apply to the fiat.
my idea now boils down to what is really a nice little car from standard, great handling, compact, pretty good standard engines, rwd, and cheap to buy is japanese though, but that doesn't matter really
the mazda mx5.
what do you guys think? can it be made into a cheap rally car for some fun? they did them for a good few years on the circuit racing so there should be a few spares available, cages etc so supply shouldn't be a problem.
they are of course a soft-top, but hard tops are available, would that meet the rally regs of today?
anyone done one over here before? i've seen one over in Aus so they have been done, just not sure about if they would comply with rally regs over here?
any advice/links to useful sites would be appreciated
